New knitting book from Laine Publishing! The Art of the Sea Turns the World of the Moomins into Contemporary Knitted Fashion

For eighty years, the Moomins have enchanted readers with their honesty, mischief and warmth. Their creator, the Finnish artist and writer Tove Jansson, is one of the most beloved figures in Nordic literature and art. This special Laine publication is inspired not only by the Moomins but also by Jansson’s artistry and distinctive way of life.
One essential feature of the book is also the sea: an element that flows through much of Jansson’s work. The photoshoot took place at the historic fortress island of Örö in the Archipelago Sea, and the stunning knitwear photos were taken by the photographer Riikka Kantinkoski and Jonna Helin, Laine’s founder and creative director.
The book’s international group of designers includes such renowned names as the Finnish Sari Nordlund, the Danish Karoline Skovgaard (Aegyoknit) and the British Charlotte Stone. The patterns explore a variety of styles and techniques, from stripes and textures to cables and colourwork. The result is a collection that feels both comforting and adventurous, much like Moominvalley itself.
Although the Moomins have inspired many makers before, this book offers a fresh, new take on their world.
“Just like with all Laine publications, we wanted to create knitted fashion that is timeless and wearable. When we were planning the book, I saw many photos of Tove Jansson and realised that she had an amazing sense of style. That also brought a new level to the book,” Jonna Helin says.
“I hope that knitters will find the sense of freedom the book embodies; that they enjoy the magic of the Moomins and let their imagination run free.”
The Art of the Sea: 23 Knitwear Designs Inspired by the Moomins is published on 14th November by Laine Publishing.
